Head coach of the national Under-17 side – the Black Starlets – Laryea Kingston, downplayed calls for revenge against Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone B Under-17 Championship.
Ghana will cross swords with the Burkinabes on Saturday in a repeat of the 2022 edition of the tournament hosted in Cape Coast.
The game which will determine the fate of the side that will make it to the Under-17 AFCON tournament to be played next year, has attracted various reactions from Ghanaians.
Many believe it is time for Ghana to avenge the defeat suffered at the hands of Burkina Faso at the same stage of the tournament in the previous edition.
But Coach Kingston has other ideas.
“Revenge? No! That’s not what we are thinking about,” he said after the team’s last training session at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“We have not been to the AFCON after our last appearance in 2017 and so we have a responsibility to return to the tournament.”
“We are playing Burkina Faso and we’ll approach it as one of the games with a different mentality but not because we want revenge,” he added.
The game will be played at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium at 17:00GMT on Saturday, 25th May, 2024.
