Teenage sensation Jerry Afriyie has revealed that his decision to join Saudi side Al Qadsiah was not motivated by financial gain.

The 18-year-old, who impressed with his talent and potential, was expected to make a move to one of Europe's top leagues after his breakthrough season last year. However, Afriyie surprised many by signing a three-and-a-half-year contract with Al Qadsiah, a club often seen as a destination for players in the latter stages of their careers.

Afriyie explained: "I see this project as something similar to what helped me get here. My focus is on my development and the timing. Football is thriving everywhere, especially here, and I must start from somewhere."

In a bid to continue his development, Al-Qadsiyah has loaned the young forward to Spanish second-division side CD Lugo for the remainder of the season.

Reflecting on the move, Afriyie said: "It’s in God’s hands, and I’m willing to do my part."

Afriyie’s breakout performances for the Ghana U-20 team at the 2023 WAFU Zone B Tournament in Togo earned him a spot in the Black Stars' squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger. He made an impressive debut, scoring a goal despite Ghana’s 1-2 defeat.

He also claimed the Golden Boot at the WAFU Zone B tournament, where Ghana finished as runners-up to Nigeria, securing a spot in the U-20 AFCON in Ivory Coast in April.

Afriyie played a pivotal role in helping Ghana’s U-20 team win the 2024 African Games, held in Ghana, where he was crowned the tournament’s top scorer.
