At 5:30am today, May 30, 2023, a tragic incident occurred at Gomoa Okyereko in the Central Region of Ghana.
The fuel tanker with registration WR 2063-10 was heading towards Takoradi when it collided with the long bus heading to Accra at 5:30am.
Eyewitnesses at the scene revealed that, the fuel tanker driver was seriously sleeping whilst driving making him veer his lane and finally leading to the unfortunate accident. They also stated that they tried their best to alert the driver of a dangerous spot to avert the tragedy but all their efforts proved futile.
“We saw the tanker driver sleepdriving around 5:30 am this morning. We tried to stop him because he was heading towards a danger zone but he did not recognize us.” An eyewitness who is a taxi driver recounted.
Sixteen passengers died at the spot. Also twenty-five sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals.
Passengers on board were mainly Liberians. Many families and loved ones have been left devastated by the tragic loss of lives. Investigations into the incident have already commenced in earnest, with the authorities looking to uncover all the possible causes that may have contributed to the carnage.
